Facebookers already know all this, and will be aware of all that's been happening with regards to transphobic journalist Julie Bindel appearing on Queer Question Time this week.
I decided yesterday to pull out of appearing at QQT to show solidarity with the trans community over the mounting anger at Julie Bindels appearence. Many felt it was not a safe queer space inviting someone so opposed to their right to transition to the panel, and having spent the best of part of yesterday really looking into both Julie Bindels journalism and putting myself in trans shoes (which aren't all killer heels for the ladies and biker boots for the boys, I believe. Although I think it's lovely even when they are!) I just can't justify walking past a queer protest to perform.
Apologies to the Royal Vauxhall Tavern. For what it's worth, I know for fact that the RVT's intentions go no further than wanting to expose and challenge negative views on all kinds of queers through debate. But all things considered, I understand wholly the position of the queer people. Some things are not open to debate, and shouldn't be in a safe queer space. Had you have asked me two days ago I would have felt differently, but as a gay man I wouldn't want a homophobic person who claimed I could be changed through psychiatry on the panel, I'd feel like "fuck off out of my space!", so on much reflection that's the stance I've taken. Not because I was "bullied" into it as some have suggested (please credit me with more guts than that, thanks!), but because I read some very recent material of Julie Bindels, and that was enough.
Thanks to the kind messages I've had from lovely people about it.
Love to y'all!
